Researchers explore ways to boost biofuel yield of bacteria

01/17/2012 | ScientificAmerican.com

Researchers are exploring the use of molecular mechanisms and fractal growth patterns to boost the biofuel output of bacteria. Scientists at the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute are developing ways of controlling E. coli bacteria at the molecular level to boost its ability to yield hydrocarbons. Meanwhile, another team of researchers received a grant from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement to study how fractal growth formations can affect the ability of bacteria to produce hydrogen and biodiesel.
