European officials call for asteroid-crashing plans

European space officials are calling for proposals to help study the science behind high-speed space collisions in the hopes of developing a plan that could potentially save the Earth from an asteroid collision. The joint U.S.-European plan, named the Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment, involves sending two spacecraft to head off the asteroid Didymos, which is projected to pass Earth in 2022.
