IBM embarks on major data center expansion

IBM announced it is investing $1.2 billion in a major data center construction project that will bolster its cloud infrastructure footprint. The news comes months after the company's recent acquisition of SoftLayer. Big Blue says it will build 15 new data centers -- at least four in areas it terms "major geography" -- with the goal of ending 2014 with a total 40 operable facilities on five continents.
