Mathews: KIPP offers refreshing self-assessment

Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews says the 2005 Knowledge is Power Program report card notes that in the KIPP schools that have been around long enough, entering fifth-graders, who ranked in the 28th percentile on norm-referenced reading and math tests, achieved the 74th percentile by the time they reached eighth grade. He praises the KIPP program's gutsy reporting of internal and external test results as a sign of its commitment to fixing failures.
