Ethernet standards could help manage virtualized data centers

Proposed Ethernet standards that are being advocated by Cisco, Hewlett-Packard and other vendors would move some processing loads from virtual to physical Ethernet switches, making it easier to oversee virtual data centers by leaving systems administrators with fewer elements to manage. "It greatly reduces the number of things you have to manage and simplifies management because the controlling switch is doing all of the work," says Cisco's Joe Pelissier. These standards could be adopted by the middle of next year.
