Apple's iOS leveled the playing field for smartphone sales in December, securing a 44.5% share of U.S. purchases, just behind Android's 46.9% -- a strong turnaround from previous months, when Android dominated, according to Nielsen. For the quarter, Android performed strongly, snaring a 46.3% share compared with Apple's 30%, Research In Motion's BlackBerry software's 14.9% and Microsoft Windows Mobile's 4.6%. Nielsen also found that 60% of cellphone buyers in the fourth quarter chose smartphones.
