$5.4B Northern Beltline project moves past legal hurdle

Construction is scheduled to begin on the first segment of the 50-mile Northern Beltline project in Birmingham, Ala. A federal judge turned down a request for an injunction to block the $5.4 billion project on environmental grounds, saying that the Black Warrior Riverkeeper, the environmental group asking for the injunction, did not prove their claims. In addition, U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins said, "[d]elaying construction would have significant financial impacts on [the] Defendants and the public treasury, especially if the bid process has to be repeated."
