Hawaii teachers prepare to vote on new contract

Hawaii teachers are set to vote today on a new six-year contract that would tie pay increases to performance evaluations. According to a document distributed by the teachers' union, a new statewide system for evaluating teachers would be implemented in the 2013-14 school year, with 50% of teacher ratings based on their contributions to student achievement. Federal government officials have warned the state that failure to agree on a contract with teachers could jeopardize the state's Race to the Top grant.
