Mich. district seeks more funding for proposed 3rd-grade reading mandate

Grand Rapids School District leaders are working with Michigan lawmakers to increase school funding on a proposed third-grade reading mandate bill. District officials are seeking additional professional development, common reading assessments, interventions and expanded preschool, district spokesman John Helmholdt said. "We need to make sure that the state is putting the appropriate dollars that are necessary and that all of these systems in a comprehensive manner are in place," he said.
