Connecticut seeks exemption from NCLB testing requirements

State Education Commissioner Betty J. Sternberg has requested an exemption from a NCLB provision requiring states to test pupils in grades 3 to 8. Sternberg says the state's system of testing pupils in grades 4, 6 and 8 is adequate and that an expansion would cost too much money. In addition, Sternberg has asked for more flexibility in determining testing requirements for students in certain areas including special education and ESL.
