FTC reassures consumers on wireless 411 directory

The FTC yesterday said mobile phone users will not receive a barrage of telemarketing calls if they sign up for a 411 directory being developed by the wireless industry and Oregon-based Qsent. The agency decided to issue the statement after receiving a large number of inquiries regarding a bogus e-mail advising consumers to sign up for the do-not-call list. In fact, telemarketers are prohibited by law from using automatic dialing systems to call mobile phones, thereby preventing most sales calls from ever reaching wireless customers.
