Hospice offers refuge for terminally ill animals

The MaxFund hospice program in Denver, Colo., employs 15 volunteers who accommodate unwanted animals suffering from cancer and other terminal illnesses and provide them with love and care in their final weeks. Only a small percentage of animal shelters nationwide have hospice programs, due to the cost of caring for sick animals, the demand for attention from healthy animals and the difficulty in finding volunteers to take on such work.
