Shell defends U.S. approval of Alaska drilling plan

Royal Dutch Shell defended a Minerals Management Service decision to permit the company's drilling program in Alaska's Chukchi Sea. This came after a coalition of groups filed a petition challenging the move, alleging that the agency has failed to consider the risks of drilling in the area. The company believes the MMS was "thorough in its technical and environmental evaluation" of the plan, Shell spokesman Curtis Smith said.
