School districts nationwide are considering lengthening the school day or year to improve student achievement. However, some parents say the proposals -- such as one in Alexandria, Va., to start school a week before Labor Day -- might overburden students. Many districts also are facing tight budgets that won't allow for extended learning. "Additional time can have an positive impact," a Duke University professor said. "But the added time has to be significant enough to change the way instruction is delivered."
