Report: Booming data demand will stifle networks by 2016

A combination of crushing demand and soaring smartphone sales will overwhelming wireless networks -- even new 4G ones -- such that download speeds could slow down to as low as 1 megabit per second at peak times by 2016, according to Deloitte's annual Technology, Media and Telecommunications report. Deloitte analysts predict that wireless traffic will grow by a factor of 50 from 2012 and create a 275 MHz "deficit" of spectrum in the U.S.
