Lawrence, Kan., residents seek solution to food desert

Residents in north Lawrence, Kan., who live in a federally designated food desert have to travel more than 2 miles to get to a supermarket, which is difficult for poor and disabled residents who can't drive. The last store, Rusty's IGA, closed in the mid-1990s, said Ted Boyle, president of the North Lawrence Improvement Association. With no plans for a grocery, food pantries and dollar and specialty stores have had to fill the void.
