Should British Columbia be synonymous with riesling or syrah?

A new study in British Columbia has pegged the region's signature grape possibilities as syrah for reds and riesling for whites, although viognier and malbec may be future contenders. Grapes were selected based on harvest and roughly 8,000 awards, according to study author Grant Hurley. "Winemakers vote with their feet by paying attention to some varietals over others in both their winemaking and submission to awards," said Hurley.
