Top Indian official makes appeal for smart grid

The official in charge of advising India's prime minister on issues of infrastructure and innovation says it's time the nation's utilities took a page from its telecom sector and set about applying the most cutting-edge technology to modernize its networks. Speaking at a recent conference on smart grid technology sponsored by the business community, Sam Pitroda called on the nation's energy sector to develop smart grid strategies to help conserve power, reduce costs and prevent power thefts. "India needs to develop its own model of development. We need to develop smart meters to meet the challenges due to power theft and develop indigenous technologies for the smart grids in the country," he said.
