Universal mental health screening for children prompts controversy

To the alarm of some conservatives, home-schoolers and others, a president-appointed commission on mental health in its July 2003 report fell just short of recommending that every American child be screened for mental-health problems. Commission Chairman Michael Hogan says giving children an annual checkup of their mental and emotional well-being "might be the right thing to do," especially for adolescents.
