Iron supplements may not improve outcomes for premature babies

Premature babies administered iron supplements did not fare any better in terms of death rates, transfusions or red blood cell density than babies who did not receive the supplements, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. "If future trials are undertaken, a larger sample size or longer duration of treatment is recommended," according to the researchers.
