Study: Women see success, still face barriers in independent films

The Sundance Institute and Women in Film Los Angeles reported in a study that roughly 41% of all Sundance film-development lab projects by female filmmakers are completed, and 80% of those projects go on to play at leading film festivals. Between 2002-2012, nearly 30% of U.S. films that appeared at the Sundance Film Festival were from female filmmakers (directors, writers, producers, cinematographers and editors), with women most likely to hold the role of producer when working behind the camera. Gendered financial barriers (43.1%) was found to be among the top barriers to women advancing their careers in film.
