Taxpayers underwrite costs of obesity

A team of health economists, working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that obesity-related health costs totaled $75 billion in 2003, of which about $39 billion came from taxpayer funds through Medicare and Medicaid. Among the illnesses covered in the treatment costs are type 2 diabetes and many forms of cancer.
