Calif. program redirects chronically ill from ERs to clinics

The Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center is teaming with a private nonprofit called COPE Health Solutions to set up private clinics designed to help steer chronically ill patients away from emergency rooms and into more appropriate -- and less expensive -- treatment. Officials say the goal is to "identify the 5 to 10% of our population that is driving 50 to 60% of our [ER] costs" and provide them care in a clinic setting.
