The Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative is one of the key drivers in the search for commercially viable fuels, says the Air Transport Association's environmental chief in a letter to Biodiesel Magazine. A CAAFI-developed time line, for instance, calls for the certification of a 50% synthetic jet fuel by the middle of this year, and a 50% biofuel in 2010. "With jet fuel as our No. 1 cost center and given the clear environmental challenges associated with traditional fossil fuels, no other industry is more motivated to bring alternative fuels to market than aviation," the letter concludes.
