Chains add low-cal choices as they seek competitive edge

Chain restaurants including Applebee's and Starbucks have added lower-calorie options as they seek to attract health-conscious consumers. Creating those options can prove challenging for casual chains known for high-calorie food and lots of it. "When people think about lower calories, they tend to think of salads and chicken," said Applebee's President Mike Archer. "We wanted to offer five very different items at portion sizes that don't make you feel like, 'Where's the other half of my meal?' "
