Chicago water district defends refusal to disinfect sewage

Chicago defended its position as the only major city in the U.S. that does not disinfect sewage. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago concluded that the increased carbon footprint of disinfecting wastewater would outweigh the environmental benefits of cleaning it before discharging it into the Chicago River.
