EADS plans satellite to beam solar power to Earth

European space company EADS Astrium says a viable system for collecting and transmitting solar power from a satellite in space to provide electricity on Earth could be within reach soon. The satellite would transmit the power via infrared laser, which would mean that even if the beams were misdirected, they could not scorch people or objects.
