Firms in high-frequency trading defend strategy

Executives and traders from a handful of high-frequency trading firms are defending the practice, saying it provides liquidity while acknowledging that it has "discomforted some people." High-frequency trading has been thrust into the spotlight as regulators strive to assess how it affects the market. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro recently said the agency is looking into whether the firms' claim of providing liquidity is correct.
