Sales at Wm Morrison jumped 6.5% in the six weeks that ended on 3 January, surpassing the growth of the supermarket's UK rivals Tesco, ASDA and J Sainsbury. "Some of the things we did at Christmas I think took our competitors a little bit by surprise. If we look at some of the offers -- half-price champagne, for example -- they were very well received, very successful. I don't think our competitors saw that one coming," said Richard Pennycook, finance director at Morrisons.
