N.C. agency seeks to suspend gill net fishing to protect sea turtles

The Division of Marine Fisheries in North Carolina is proposing to ban fishing with large mesh gill nets in designated areas of the state's coastal waters from May 15 to Dec. 15 in a bid to protect endangered or threatened species of sea turtles. "We're hoping to get the application in this spring and the hope is for approval by the 2011 fishing season," a spokeswoman for the agency division said.
