West Africa sees rise in opposition to female genital mutilation

Muslim clerics in Mauritania and Niger have taken swipes at the practice of female genital mutilation. The Mauritanian religious leaders issued a fatwa after widespread opposition to the practice from the medical community. Niger handed down fines and suspended jail sentences against 45 mothers for complicity.
