Energy Dept. directs $452M for small reactor projects

The Department of Energy has kicked off a funding program for small modular reactor designs, allocating $452 million over five years for two potential projects. "The government is particularly interested in SMR designs that incorporate passive safety features," which depend on physics to maintain the safety of the reactor, the department said. Westinghouse Electric, which is working on a 200-megawatt reactor design, said it will apply for a grant.
