Rather than patching deteriorating roads and other civil structures, what about extending their life by protecting their interior? That's the idea of Professor Eugen Brühwiler of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland who has taken gravel out of the concrete mix and replaced it with short, thin metal fibers, creating an ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete that is impervious to water and gas and has an accelerated curing process.
