Green roofs to help buildings of NYC firm become sustainable

More than an acre of green roofs will be installed on eight buildings owned by the Durst Organization in New York City. The real-estate company plans to invest between $750,000 and $1 million to install the roofs as a way to save energy and benefit the environment. "Beyond diverting storm water runoff, they provide cooling by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise be converted to heat energy, and they can capture pollutants and filter noxious gases," said Helena Durst, the company's vice president.
