Study: PET could diagnose CTE in patients

Results from PET imaging with the FDDNP tracer showed tau protein accumulation in the brains of five retired National Football League players with suspected chronic traumatic encephalopathy, according to a study in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. The findings were consistent with results from autopsies of players who had the condition, researchers said. They added that the study, while small, may pave the way toward the routine use of PET scans to prevent the development of the disease and to manage patients with the condition.
