MAPI report examines changing nature of trade statistics

Customs-based trade statistics are becoming less informative due to global production sharing and other trends, according to a MAPI report. It suggests tracing value-added trade back to source countries and source industries to get a more accurate read on countries' competitiveness. MAPI economist Yingying Xu noted that services are "a significant source of domestic content for exported manufactured goods and are about evenly split between business services and administrative services."
