Drug maker updates safety information on epilepsy drug

Janssen-Ortho and Health Canada announced the release of new safety information for the drug Topamax, with the company citing five Canadian cases of metabolic acidosis in which the normal acid-base balance is disrupted. Besides symptoms of rapid breathing, persistent lack of energy and loss of appetite, those with the condition also can experience heart problems, confused thinking or reduced consciousness.
