Study: OTC heartburn drug is as effective, much cheaper than prescription

A new analysis from Consumer Reports indicates that the over-the-counter antacid drug Prilosec offers the same benefits for treating heartburn as prescription drugs in the same class, known as proton pump inhibitors, but for a fraction of the price. The report suggests that Prilosec is also as effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease, but some doctors questioned whether the nonprescription drug is as potent as the prescription versions.
