True food allergies are serious but rare

Though about 20% of the population claims to have a food allergy, the actual number is between 3% and 4%, said Hugh Sampson, director of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute. Many people confuse food intolerance, which is less serious, with an allergy, or they don't realize their reaction to food has changed over time.
