US Airways is considering merger with American, sources say

US Airways President Scott Kirby is leading the analysis for consideration of a US Airways merger with American Airlines, sources say. A merger of the carriers would form the second-largest airline in the U.S. and could provide benefits for creditors. "Unsecured creditors would get a better return out of a merged airline than American trying to go it alone," said Jeff Straebler, an airline analyst. Representatives for American and US Airways declined to comment.
