Natural structures as protection from tsunami damage

Kogami, a nonprofit group, has developed a concept that uses natural solutions to mitigate damage from tsunamis. It designed a prototype scheme for the tsunami-prone Sumatran city of Padang in Indonesia that uses the technology of cathode accretion -- "putting a small electrical charge in the water that draws calcium carbonate (the stuff reefs are made of) out of solution and onto an iron-based skeleton" -- to build artificial reefs and even evacuation shelters. Because they are "literally grown from the ocean environment, the hope is that they’d be more resistant to the damage caused by a tsunami."
