Number of women choosing prophylactic mastectomies is up fivefold

Up to 15% of women with breast cancer are choosing double mastectomies as a prophylactic measure, more than a fivefold increase over the late 1990s, according to researchers. "Women feel like it's a body part over which they totally have a choice, and they say, 'I want to put this behind me -- I don't want to worry about it anymore,'" said Sarah Hawley, who teaches internal medicine at the University of Michigan.
