Instructional coach and consultant Ben Johnson in this blog post describes how he creates "WILD HOG" classroom questions that are "Written Intentionally for Learning Depth and Higher Order Genius." These questions are crafted ahead of a lesson and can be targeted to particular students or groups of students. "Finally, when you take the time to think about exactly what questions you want to ask students, you can anticipate their responses and better control the flow of the learning activities," he writes.
