Mass. ordered to provide gender reassignment surgery for transgender inmate

A federal appeals court last week upheld a lower court ruling requiring the Massachusetts Department of Corrections to provide gender reassignment surgery for a transgender inmate convicted of murder in 1992. The three-judge panel said the inmate's severe gender identity disorder makes the treatment medically necessary. All people are afforded the right to necessary medical treatment, "even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox," the court said.
