Smithfield parent rebrands as WH Group

Smithfield Foods' parent company has changed its name from Shuanghui International Holdings to WH Group. The "W" corresponds to the Chinese character "wan," which means eternity, and the "H" corresponds to "zhou," which means continents. "The new name ... serves to better differentiate the company as a corporate brand from its numerous product brands," according to WH. Marketing expert Chris Pullig says the change is a good move because some Americans, fair or not, have a negative perception of businesses with a Chinese-sounding name.
