Some 3,000 people turned out Saturday at a training session to prepare volunteers to help Detroit students become better readers. The district's Volunteer Reading Corps was created by emergency financial manager Robert Bobb in December after it was estimated that as many as 50% of Detroit students are not reading at or above grade level. "We need to make it happen," Bobb said at the event. "Together, we can make it happen for every child."
