Java community frets about future under Oracle

Users of Java are uncertain how Oracle's purchase of Java-owner Sun Microsystems will affect vendors that rely on the programming language. Oracle will hold a webcast on Wednesday to outline how it sees the future of Java, OpenOffice and MySQL. Experts say Oracle could make it difficult for developers to say a program is compatible with Java or it could try to assess fees for specification access. Since Java is an open-source language, however, it may difficult to persuade developers to stick with the official version of the platform if they feel they're being mistreated by Oracle, sources note.
