Positive recognition could be a more powerful motivator than money for many employees, according to Harvard Business School professor Ian Larkin. His research shows that employees are willing to trade higher pay for an opportunity to have their achievements recognized by their peers. When it comes to improving performance, "social comparisons matter just as much" as money, Larkin says.
