Japanese groups tout advances in "white space" speed

Japanese researchers say they have achieved a "historic breakthrough" in white-space technology by exploiting new IEEE standards for equipment that enabled them to attain download speeds of 5.2 megabits per second and upload speeds of 4.5 Mbps over a distance of 7.9 miles. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and Hitachi Kokusai Electric said their base station conformed to the IEEE 802.22 standard while they deployed customer premises equipment using the IEEE 802.11af standard.
