American announces pilot furloughs

American Airlines plans to furlough up to 175 pilots by mid-year, with the first 80 furloughs expected late next month. "The impact of the economy and reduction in capacity over the last 18 months, coupled with lower-than-expected pilot attrition, has resulted in a pilot surplus," American said in a statement issued on Friday.
